About this resource
Beat! started as a metronome that does what a good rhythm coach does: a big tempo you can read across the room, a wheel you can turn or tap, and subdivision faders you can mix rather than choose between. Quavers under triplets for three-against-two. Semiquavers quietly under the beat for a student rushing the run. Swing at whatever ratio the chart calls for.
It counts time signatures the way musicians do. 6/8, 9/8 and 12/8 run in dotted crotchets with the quaver pulses shown underneath, so a tempo of 60 means one bar of 6/8 per second. Pick 7/8 or 5/4 and it asks how you want it grouped. The tempo trainer nudges the speed up every few bars; the gap trainer drops out the click so you can hear who kept going.
Switch to the sequencer when a click isn't enough. Five rows, up to four bars, six kits from a dry jazz kit to an 808, and a library of grooves — rock, funk, hip hop, house, swing, shuffles, bossa nova, son clave, bembé, 5/4 and 7/8. Edit any of them, change the sounds row by row, and save your own. Settings stay in the browser; nothing to sign up for.
